Floppy’s Phonics Parents Event

Abdulrahman Kanoo School Diyar (ARKS) proudly hosted an engaging Parent Information Session on Saturday, 27th September, in collaboration with international and regional delegates from Oxford University Press. The interactive event welcomed parents and guardians from both ARKS and ARKIS, creating a shared platform for dialogue, learning, and community building.

The session, led by Lisette Martin, Senior Professional Development Manager at Oxford University Press, focused on the theme “Supporting Your Child with Reading at Home.”

Mrs. Martin emphasized that reading is more than just a skill — “It’s about creating a special time with your child, making it an activity that strengthens bonds and nurtures curiosity.” She highlighted practical strategies, such as:

·   Making it special – “Give reading your time and treat it as an enjoyable activity you do together.”

·   Building good habits – “Commit to a regular reading routine, encourage curiosity, and be the role model your child looks up to.”

·   Using phonics – “When listening to your child read, respond positively. Guide them through unknown words with patience and encouragement.”

Reflecting on the event, Dr. Sara Mehkari, Head of Primary School at ARKS, shared: “Partnership between school and home is key to a child’s success. Empowering parents with tools and strategies helps us create a culture where reading is not just a task but a joy.”

The event underscored the school’s ongoing commitment to nurturing academic excellence while strengthening the vital connection between school and family.
